Clouds

  • Read "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle
    1. Make all of the shapes from Little Cloud out of paper.
    2. Glue them onto popsicle sticks.
    3. Hand them out to the kids or spread them out on the table.
    4. Have the kids hold up the right shape as you read!
  • Read “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” by Charles G. Shaw
    1. After you read, fold a piece of dark blue paper in half.
    2. Give the kids a small amount of white paint and let them drizzle it on their paper.
    3. Fold the blue paper in half again and lightly press down.
    4. Carefully open the paper to reveal their own cloud shape!
    5. Let dry, then have the kids narrate a short description of their own cloud … “It looked like _____” Write it at the bottom of the page.
  • Go outside & watch the clouds. Have a picnic too!
  • Get a book at the library about the different kinds of clouds.
  • Shaving Cream Clouds
    1. Give your preschooler a blue plastic plate and some shaving cream (or just do this right on the table. Wipe up afterwards and you have a clean table!)
    2. Let them use their hands and fingers to make cloud shapes.
    3. Stop there – or – take a piece of blue paper and gently press it down on your shaving cream clouds.
    4. Carefully remove and let your cloud picture dry.
  • Cotton Cloud Shapes
    1. On blue construction paper, make an outline of a simple shape (a truck, cat, flower, etc).
    2. Let the kids brush glue all over the shape, then place cotton balls on the glue to cover the shape. Now you have a truck cloud!
  • Little Cloud Rhyme & Puppet
    1. Make a simple cloud puppet by poking a large marshmallow onto a wooden skewer!
    2. Sing the following rhyme to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”
    3. Use your cloud puppets to do simple actions.
I’m a little cloud up in the sky
You can see me way up high.
Sometimes I’m puffy and sometimes stretched out
I just love to float about.
  • Blue Skies & White Clouds
    1. On a white piece of paper, use a white crayon to draw cloud shapes all over the paper.
    2. Give the kids a “blank” cloud paper and a cup of watered-down blue paint.
    3. Have them paint a blue sky over the whole paper, revealing all of the white clouds!
Snack Idea: banana slices topped with whipped cream clouds!
