Owl

owl moon
  • Read "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen
  • Before you read! Go on an imaginary walk through the woods.
    1. Tell the kids it's nighttime and there is snow on the ground, so they need to dress warmly.
    2. Pantomime putting winter clothes on (hat, boots, coat).
    3. Lead them around the room, being very quiet as you walk.
    4. Stop occasionally and ask what animals they might see in the woods.
    5. Pretend to remove all of your winter clothes then read the story!

  • After you read! Go on an owl hunt.
    1. Cut out five brown owl cutouts. You can use the graphics above or one of your own!
    2. Write a different fact (below) on each owl. Or print out the owls ready to go below.
      • Many owls eat small animals like mice & rats
      • Owls have sharp claws called talons
      • Many owls go out at nighttime
      • An owl is a type of bird
      • An owl’s call sounds like “whoo, whoo, whoo!”

  • Tape the owl up in different places in the room.
  • Turn off the lights & give the kids a flashlight. Let them find the owls (being very quiet to not scare the owls) and read the fun facts.

    • This looked like such a cute book and fun idea posted during Oopsey Daisy’s Summer Camp (click the link for the original post!) …. Little Hoot is an owl who wants to go to bed when it gets dark. But since owls stay up at night, his parents have him think of lots of activities to keep him awake!

      1. Read Little Hoot by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
      2. Now read it again, but stop and do some of the same activities as Little Hoot!

    Snack Idea: Edible Owls
      1. Cut out a circle from a piece of bread. Spread with peanut butter, jelly or pretzelcream cheese.
      2. Place a pretzel upside-down on the bread.
      3. Put a yellow M&M in each section of the pretzel for eyes.
      4. Put a triangle cheese slide below the pretzel for a beak.
